Practicing Empathy: Emotional Contagion and Boundaries

This article is based on my personal practice and experiences. Deep empathy encompasses both the conscious effort of distinguishing oneself from others (self-other differentiation) and naturally blending with their emotions in an almost seamless manner (self-other blending). Achieving this balance requires a delicate interplay between boundary recognition and emotional osmosis, deeply rooted in the act of acknowledging and accepting emotions. This practice is like trying to listen to two different songs simultaneously without getting confused, enduring the dissonance and discomfort, and eventually harmonizing them as one.

Conscious Effort: Self and Other Differentiation

It's crucial to distinguish between one's emotions and those of others consciously. Recognizing boundaries is essential to maintain one's emotional stability and avoid being overwhelmed by external emotions. Along this journey, one often faces the agony of conflict, enduring it without being swayed by overwhelming emotions. There's a conscious effort to not act solely based on these intense feelings.

The Role of Emotions in Leadership and the Quest for Equilibrium

While democratic leadership often appears effective, it can falter due to insufficient understanding and response to emotional contagion, leading to empathy deficits. If followers lack emotional self-awareness, leadership's effectiveness can wane. Hence, for truly effective leadership, leaders must deeply grasp empathy, while followers should amplify their emotional self-awareness. This understanding underscores the importance of emerging leadership models like inclusive leadership and stewardship. Through game theory, we can explore the balance between leadership and followership.
