Observing the Extreme User Within: An Angle on Self-Reflection

At the heart of design thinking lies the approach of observing extreme users. The aim of this method is to understand and empathize with the fundamental needs, emotions, and actions of the user. Yet, can't this process of observation also be applied to our own inner selves?

Buddhist teachings, particularly the meditation practices of Buddha, emphasize deeply observing one's inner realm. This introspection focuses on facing the true self, encompassing both the good and the not-so-good aspects. It's akin to observing an 'extreme user' that is oneself.

There are similarities between self-observation and observing extreme users. Both require sensing deep emotions, fairness, and non-judgmental observation. By not only observing external users but also objectively observing oneself, we can recognize our true self, deepening our self-acceptance.

Ultimately, the observation and acceptance of oneself are not only crucial steps for delving deeper into our inner selves and paving the way for personal growth but also lead to a deeper understanding and acceptance of others and the external world. This exploration of the inner realm has been regarded as the key to the external world and universal truths in many traditions and philosophies.
